Gore – Stand up or Sit down?

Nobel Laureate and Environmental Activist Al Gore today called on young people to practice civil disobedience to help stop the construction of coal plants.
“We have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration,” he said.
“For a carbon company to spend money convincing the stock-buying public that the risk from the global climate crisis is not that great,” he said, “represents a form of stock fraud.”
Currently 28 coal plants are under construction in the U.S, while another 20 have permits to begin building.
None of these have plans for carbon sequestration. The reason? It [...]

Rubber Duckies Measure Glacier Melt!

It’s finally happened. A rocket scientist has helped drop 90 rubber ducks inside a giant glacier.
These yellow rubber mascots are meant to help scientists measure the rate of flow and direction of glacier melt off the coast of Greenland.
Each rubber ducky has the words “science experiment” and “reward” printed in 3 languages on them. Finders will hopefully contact scientists by email to let them know where these yellow messengers have landed.
From the report, this is a serious scientific venture. But who can ignore the amusement factor? Imagine walking along a beach and realizing that what you thought was a strange looking fish was actually a small group of yellow rubber [...]

EPA's SmartWay Surprises California Car Buyers

The EPA, beleaguered by challenges from politicians and environmentalists alike, is about to unveil a program California seems to have jumped the gun on.
The EPA’s SmartWay Leaf Campaign is a certification program that will create mandatory placing of stickers on all 2009 cars and trucks, certifying them for greater fuel efficiency and low greenhouse gas emissions.
According to the EPA, however, only about 20% of all cars and trucks would qualify to earn that certification. Overall, pretty grim statistics.
California, however, has taken a slightly different but likely more effective path. In 2005, Governor Schwarzenneger signed AB 1229 into law. The first of it’s kind, this new law – which takes effect [...]

Eco-friendly Products – What's Out There?

I’ve been reaching out on several “talk” sites for journalists, to see how best to access new and innovative environmentally-related products that make a difference.
The response I’ve gotten has been almost overwhelming. People have been generous with their ideas and suggestions. There are so many ideas and possibilities that I’ll be busy for quite a while putting the stories and posts together. From amazingly efficient roofing to a virtual city where students can explore the impact of pollution, to a device that adjusts outdoor watering based on need. And that’s just scratching the surface.
Hope you’re properly intrigued to come back to read and learn more about some amazing products and [...]
