I know I’ve said it before, but the time has come to make the move for real.

If you’re reading this through an RSS feed or just checking in, you’ll want to switch over to my permanent site over on Wordpress..This GreenPress site will close shortly.  Regrettably, this will be my last post on this site.

BUT no worries! All the cool environmental stories, breaking eco-news and eco-innovations will still be coming, just on the Envirothink site on WordPress. So be sure to make the change with me.  In a letter delivered today to the US Senate, the Coalition said any climate change and energy legislation “must include measures to increase the use of sustainable and organic farming systems to increase the ability of our nation’s agricultural soils to sequester large amounts of carbon.” These systems would, the group said, improve the soil, lower farmers’ contribution to greenhouse gas levels and help farmers adapt to and survive rapid changes in climate.

Scientists were testing the material in these pavers for their air-purifying capabilities.  Researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands (TUe) did three air-purity measurements last spring and discovered that over the  area paved with air-purifying concrete, the NO_x content was 25 to 45 percent lower than that over the area paved with normal concrete.

Anti-whaling activist Peter Bethune

After months in a Japanese prison and a trial watched from around the world, anti-whaling activist Peter Bethune has been given a suspended sentence by a Japanese court.

Bethune, a member of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was convicted of assault and obstructing Japan’s whaling fleet in the Antarctic. Bethune was found guilty by the Tokyo District Court of illegally boarding a Japanese whaling ship,  trespassing, vandalism and possession of a knife. Bethune pleaded guilty to all charges except assault.

Greenpeace

Costco has repeatedly assured shareholders and customers that it supports sustainable seafood, yet its actions say otherwise. Consumers can easily find 15 of the 22 seafoods ‘red-listed’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) which is the world’s leading authority on species in danger of extinction. Costco regularly carries two of the world’s most critically endangered species: orange roughy and Chilean sea bass.

A ban on phosphates had been in the works in a number of states since 2008, to give detergent companies time to develop effective dishwashing alternatives

The problem with phosphates is that when they get into our waterways, they promote the growth of algae. This in turn blocks out sunlight, depleting oxygen in the water and potentially killing off aquatic wildlife.

Earth Creation's sustainable fashioin is made with all natural materials and dyes

Approximately one-third of a pound of chemicals are used to grow the cotton in one t-shirt. There are an array of harsh chemicals that are used throughout the garment manufacturing process, most of which are toxic to humans. These include chlorine, sodium hydroxide, heavy metal salts and formaldehyde. Residuals of these toxins stay in the fabric. They also find their way into wastewater systems, particularly in developing countries.

Many dyes that are excluded from the Organic Standards contain toxic components, said Martin Ledvina, co-founder of Earth Creations, Inc. Most conventional dyes don’t comply with EPA regulations so they’re sent overseas. The products that use these dyes, often made in sweatshops, make their way back here.    

Earth Creations makes fashionable sustainable clothing from materials like hemp and organic cotton, using natural clay-based dyes and others that have a low impact on the environment.
